The cutouts are the reason to light them: the lights inside throw small stars onto the wall and ceiling around them, which is a different effect from a lit garland or a string of bulbs. Hang them in a window, over a stairwell, or above a table. The remote means you are not reaching behind furniture to switch them on every evening, and they collapse and store flat for next year.
