A table cover, or tablecloth, drapes over the whole table to cover the surface, while a table runner is a narrower strip that runs down the center over a cover or bare table for a decorative accent. Many tables use both: a cover as the base and a runner for color and pattern on top.

A table runner should be longer than your table so it overhangs the ends, typically by about 6 to 12 inches on each side, and roughly a third of the table's width. Measure your table length and add 12 to 24 inches total. When using it with placemats, a narrower runner down the center works best.

You can use either or both. A tablecloth alone gives a clean, covered look; placemats alone suit a bare table you want to show; and layering placemats over a cloth or runner adds depth and protects the table. For parties, layering creates a styled look, while everyday meals often just need placemats.
