Party decorations are the pieces that change the room rather than the table. They hang on the wall, drift near the ceiling, and give every photo something behind it. This is where all of ours live, from the decorations that go up an hour before anyone arrives to the small finishing touches nobody notices until they are missing. Planning a birthday? Our birthday decorations are gathered in one place.
Start with the walls. Banners and garlands carry the message, fringe backdrops turn a blank corner into a photo wall, and photo props give guests something to hold once they get there. Overhead, foil balloons and latex balloons do the lifting. Then confetti for the table, and a piñata for the part everyone remembers.
How do you decorate for a party?
Work from the biggest surface down. Put one statement piece on the main wall, a fringe backdrop or a balloon garland, and let it anchor the room. Add a banner across the front of it, then run a smaller garland along the table edge. Balloons fill the corners. Confetti and table pieces go last, because they read as finishing rather than structure. Keeping one color story throughout is what separates a room that looks styled from one that looks decorated twice.
Where to spend if you are not buying everything
Spend above eye level. Guests look up far more than anyone expects, and the ceiling is the surface most people forget to use, so a garland hung high or a cluster of balloons overhead does more work than the same money spread thin across the table.
