Old World Christmas began in 1979, when Tim and Beth Merck reintroduced figural glass ornament designs to the United States. The company says its glass ornaments are made with techniques that date to the 1800s: molten glass is mouth-blown into molds carved exclusively for Old World Christmas, then each piece is hand-painted and glittered in a series of steps. That is why an Old World Christmas pickle or pie slice looks hand finished up close, with no two brushstrokes quite the same.
The range runs far beyond the classic Christmas pickle. Food lovers will find pies, cakes, pizza, and sourdough with our food ornaments; dog and cat people can pick a favorite breed from our animal and pet ornaments; and the bar cart crowd gets martinis, Manhattans, and beer in our cocktail ornaments. There are golf greens, fishing lures, mahjong racks, seashells, gingerbread cottages, and nutcrackers too, which makes these hand-painted Christmas ornaments an easy gift for almost anyone on your list.
Old World Christmas also makes tree toppers, tree skirts, and a lit tabletop tree, all in this collection alongside the ornaments. Many ornaments carry the Old World Christmas cap and charm, and many include a small story tag explaining what the piece means, a nice touch when you give one as a gift.
