Cloth napkins in the Laurel Plaid, a cream ground crossed with red, navy, and pale blue. A set of four, handwoven from 100% cotton by artisans in Chiapas, Mexico.

Eighteen inches square is the standard dinner-napkin size, and it is the size that actually stays put on a lap instead of sliding to the floor between courses. Anything smaller is a cocktail napkin. Cotton at this weight presses flat, absorbs properly rather than pushing a spill around, and softens with each wash instead of wearing thin.

The plaid is the useful kind: warm enough for a fall table, cool enough in the blues that it does not read strictly autumnal.
