Halloween crackers are usually the last thing anyone thinks about, which is exactly why this one lands. It is a jumbo surprise cracker, a 10 inch paper tube wrapped to a 15 inch finished length in black plaid fabric print tissue with curling ribbon at both ends, and it holds 17 to 20 small surprises. There is no snap and no bang here; you simply pull it open, which is a mercy at a table with young kids and skittish dogs. Set one across each plate and the meal starts with everybody's hands busy at the same moment, which is more than most halloween table decorations manage.
